Query by Lambert: Why hasn’t the legalization of marijuana been exploited by the tobacco industry?
Why does not a firm like Phillip Morris lobby for the legalization of marijuana? By lobbying for it they would be gaining a foothold in the industry, and that would be really worth billions. Even without having corporate benefits, state and federal governments could make a fortune on the tax of marijuana. How is it that the enthusiasm for the almighty dollar hasn’t achieved this, given that medical reports and common sense have attempted and failed?

Becuase there are still people out there living in a “reefer madness” fantasy world where people go on shooting rampages and rape girls and die in car accidents when smoking marijuana. Regardless of the amount of money surrounding it, there would be a public outcry that would counteract the financial benifit to the politicians. Goodluck getting re-elected on the Weed-ticket.

This situation is often related to the prohibition of alchohol, which is not a good comparison. Alchohol is too worked into the social fabric of American private and business life. There was no public outcry to get it off the streets. Its the same with cigerettes. You have to keep in mind that the majority of the population–primarily in places that have bad weed, like the South–that consider weed in the same category as LSD or Heroin, rather than in the Alchohol/Tobacco “industries.”
