Q&A: Can a non resident get a physicians recommendation for medical marijuana in California?

Question by : Can a non resident get a medical professionals recommendation for medical marijuana in California?
If you are a resident to a state other than California can you still get a medical professionals recommendation for marijuana? I recognize you need to be a resident for the medical marijuana card but I have read that the card is “voluntary”. So would you have the exact same safety with a recommendation as you would a card? Thanks in advance

There is no protection with a doctor’s recommendation.
You must be a resident to get the card, and be covered under whatever protection it grants.

A doctor’s recommendation is all you need. A card is helpful in dealing with law enforcement, but is not necessary for a defense under the law. I can find nothing in the Compassionate Use Act which requires you to be a resident to get a doctor’s recommendation, although whether you will be able to find a doctor who will make a recommendation for a non-resident is a different question.
